Sainsbury’s 2012 School Games
Trials for the twelve volleyball places in the squad have taken place since September with sessions on two days per month. The squad, consisting of the best volleyball athletes from the whole South of England (Lands End to Kings Lynn), will be taking on England North, England Central, Wales, East and West Scotland and Ireland in the UK School Games.
Many congratulations to Yasmin Kaashoek who has been selected to compete at the Sainsbury’s 2012 School Games in London in May. This is a fantastic achievement. These games are the pinnacle of the nationwide School Games competition for the best school-aged athletes in the UK. The last day of sports events will take place in the Olympic Park and will include competition in the Olympic Stadium. With a total of twelve sports, around 1650 competitions and around 30,000 spectators, the event promises to be a fantastic celebration of competitive youth sport. Well done Yasmin – we hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable and successful time.
There was an extra incentive into making the squad this year as the tournament is being held at the Olympic venue, with the athletes staying in the Olympic village. It will be a great experience for Yasmin to play at Earls Court just a month before the Olympic athletes take to the stage.
For the school, having another athlete representing the South of England at Volleyball after Robyn Sayers, Rachel Draper and Jodie Amor all in last years squad, is a fantastic achievement.
If you or your son or daughter is interested in starting volleyball, the school runs an after school club on a Friday from 15:30-17:00 and this is free of charge. Everyone is welcome and there are great opportunities to play against other schools and clubs.

Netball v St Augustines
Year 10 won 12-4 Player of the Match Becci Meredith (Year 9). Year 11 lost 12-23.
Lavington 0-5 Kingdown
Lavington School’s year 11 football team put up a brave fight against a very good Kingdown side. Kingdown, who have won all their previous matches and have a Bristol City Academy player, made the difference with a very good free kick and had a strong influence on the game. Lavington went in at half time 1-0 down. The score-line did not reflect the match as Lavington had a header cleared off the line and had a stronghold on the game. The difference at half time was from a very good curling effort from some way out. In the second half the cracks began to appear and Kingdown were by far the better team. We created few chances and should have conceded many more if it wasn’t for Tobi Hempson in goal who, in my opinion, was man of the match.

Year 10 Girls’ Cricket
We had a surprise visitor this week, Charlotte Edwards, the England Womens’ Cricket captain, came to umpire the Year 10 indoor match against Abbeyfield. Congratulations to the cricket team who beat Abbeyfield winning by one wicket. They will now progress to the next round of the Lady Taverners competition next month.
The Player of the Match was Darcy Lyon.
Y7 Netball Tournament
On a cold Saturday morning we took 19 Y7 netballers to Devizes School for the Mid Wiltshire Netball Tournament. The B team played fantastic netball winning 4 games drawing 3 and losing only 1! This left the overall results very close there was only 5 points between the first six finishers, in the B competition Lavington came 6th out of the 9 schools entered.
The A team played their first game against St Marys and won comfortably, giving them the confidence to go on and win all of their games. The team played some outstanding Netball having worked incredibly hard over the last term and were worthy winners of the Mid Wilts Netball shield! A big well done to everyone that participated, thank you to all the supporters and for the hot chocolate!
Congratulations …..
to Emma Smale who was successfully selected for the next stage of the trials towards being enrolled in the National Talent League for Netball over half term. Good luck for the next stage in December!
And . . . Congratulations to Rebecca Meredith and Eloise Church (Year 9) who have both been selected for the U14 Wiltshire County Hockey squad.
