Robotics Challenge
A short while ago, year 10 students put their enterprising skills to the test in a robotics challenge organised
by Wessex Setpoint of Bath University. Each tutor group was divided into teams of four with specific roles
within their energy orientated company. Each company promoted or sold an energy saving device, such as
solar panels, and put together a short five minute presentation promoting their product. In addition the team
had to build and program a robot which was used to achieve specific environmental tasks in a built environment
on a fioor mat. Each solved problem scored points and these were added to their presentation scores
to total an overall profit for the company.
Well done to all teams for participating well and demonstrating their problem solving, teamwork, communication
and listening skills. All of these are key employability skills sought after by employers and therefore
useful for the future.
Music Success
Congratulations to Chloe Jordan who passed her Grade 4 piano exam with merit and her Grade 7 singing exam with distinction.
Mock Interviews for Year 11
Over the past few weeks Year 11 students have been preparing themselves for mock interviews for a fictitious job or an impending college, sixth form or apprenticeship interview. During their PSHE sessions they have looked at the best way to complete application forms and how to conduct themselves in an interview situation which they put into practice on November 5th. The interviewers, who were all from the local community, offered their services for the day in order to interview the complete year group and give them a very valuable experience which will be much needed in the future. The feedback from the students was very positive and the interviewers were impressed by how the students came across in the interviews, although clearly there is still a lot of work to do on the actual application forms.
Many thanks to all nine interviewers as, without their help, this valuable experience could not take place; Mrs Howells, Mr Ormond, Mr Morgan, Mr Stansfield, Mrs Appleby, Mrs Sherman, Mr Parkes, Mr Stevens and Mrs Thomas-Neale.
Young Sports Ambassadors
Congratulations to Liam Foster and Robyn Sayers who are Lavington School’s Young Ambassadors for Sport. The Young Ambassador programme is an initiative which empowers youngsters around the country to inspire their friends and peers and will form a key part of the London 2012 activities in schools in the run up to the Games. The Young ambassadors will be working within Lavington and local primary schools; leading school assemblies, mentoring other youngsters and getting more young people participating in sport.
