Year 7 Rugby Team Tournament Sucess

On Thursday 19 November the boys Year 7 rugby team competed in the West Wilts Rugby Tournament. From their first pool game the boys played some of their best rugby to date. The forwards worked hard around the pitch and rucked, mauled and scrummaged with great body positions which couldn't be matched by the opposing teams.  In addition to this the backs carved the opposition apart with some great runs and put in some huge tackles to send their opponents flying backwards.  The most noticeable performance of the day was against St Laurence School whereby Lavington exerted so much pressure on the opposition that they rarely broke out of their own half. This led to the boys winning all of their pool games and therefore qualifying for the final where they met Clarendon.   After all their hard work throughout the afternoon the boys were exhausted but dug deep once again to show their class and win what was a very tight final.  Staff at Lavington cannot remember a time when a boys rugby team has won a tournament and this goes to show what a talented group of rugby players this squad is.  Well done.

 Basketball

The U14's boys Basketball team competed in their first fixture of the season last week against a very strong John of Gaunt side.  Although the team ended up second best they put together some great attacking plays to score a solid 21 points and showed great team spirit.

Young Sports Ambassadors

Congratulation to Liam Foster and Robyn Sayers who are Lavington School’s Young Ambassadors for Sport.  The Young Ambassador programme is an initiative which empowers youngsters around the country to inspire their friends and peers and will form a key part of the London 2012 activities in schools in the run up to the Games. The Young ambassadors will be working within Lavington and local primary schools; leading school assemblies, mentoring other youngsters and getting more young people participating in sport.

Well done to. . . .
Calum Conway and Matthew Lawrence who played their last district games last night and both have been selected to play for Dorset and Wilts Under 14's. Their first game will be against Hampshire in February.

County Cup Rugby
The U14’s and U15’s played their second round matches in the County Cup last week. The U14s came up against a very strong St John’s side in horrendous weather. The whole team came together to play some very impressive rugby and demonstrated a great team spirit despite coming out second best. The U15’s also met strong opposition against St.Augustine’s and conceded three tries in the first half. Despite this the boys showed great team cohesion and belief in themselves in the second half and they dominated territory and possession. Unfortunately they were unable to capitalise on this and lost 17-7. Both teams can be proud of their performances, well done.

Year 7 Rugby Tournament

The Year 7’s participated in their first rugby tournament of the season last Thursday at Devizes RFC. The boys played well from the very start and finished the pool stage undefeated to make it through to the semi final of the Cup. The semi final was a tight contest however, Lavington were able to score in the last play of the game to make it through to the final against Sheldon. Within the pool stage Lavington had drawn with Sheldon and the final was once again a hard fought
contest. Unfortunately injuries hit the team and the boys narrowly lost to finish second overall. A great start for the team.
