16-19 Study Programme Requirements

We are required to provide details as to how our provision and curriculum meets the 16-19 student program requirements.  This is detailed below.

All students in Lavington 6 are enrolled on a study programme that combines qualifications (minimum 3 A levels) and other activities which include the Extended Qualification Project (EPQ), Level 3 Sports Leaders Award, Core Maths and volunteering.

Any student starting sixth form at Lavington who has not achieved a standard pass in either English or Maths are required to continue studying for this qualification.  However standard entry into sixth from requires students to have achieved this pass level and only in exceptional circumstances are entries to sixth form for pupils not achieving this pass grade considered.

All our programmes of study are designed to provide students with structured and challenging learning programmes that are tailored to fit their interest and career aspirations.  All A level courses are supported by compulsory supervised study sessions, where students are directed toward important and compulsory independent study tasks to supplement learning covered in lessons, this is in addition to set ‘homework’.

All students in Year 12 are expected to take part in work experience which is relevant to their course selections and/or career aspirations in order to develop further their career choices and apply skills in real working conditions.

In addition to the EPQ, Sports Leaders and Core Maths students are directed to other non-qualification activity to broaden their skills and enrich the sixth form experience, these include volunteering and student leadership roles.

Through tutor students follow a comprehensive personal development package that covers statutory areas but also supports students wider personal development and growth.

The core aim of study for students at Lavington School will be their A level choices (typically 3) meaning they are following one or more substantial academic qualifications that appear on the DFE list of approved qualifications for 16-19.   Students may move between A level subjects during the first term, if through discussion with tutor and head of sixth from they feel they have made the wrong choice.  After Term 1 students are not able to switch and the core aim agreed between pupils and school will remain unchanged during the year.  The remainder of their study programme is designed to complement this core aim.

Students following subjects where there is practical application of maths and statistics may be encouraged to consider following core maths to support their ability to problem solve, reasoning and the wider practical application of maths. We believe this can be hugely beneficial for pupils.

Students attend every day full time.  They will receive face to face delivery for each of the A level options with only Further Maths being supported by some specialist online delivery (completed in school).  Students have face to face supervised study sessions on their timetable to work in school on their A level subjects, independent and directed work is set for these sessions.  Students have dedicated sessions for EPQ, Sports Leaders and Core Maths.  Students have tutor periods and Assembly each week to cover the personal development programme.  Year 13 and some Year 12 students who have passed a probation period and have demonstrated they can mange all the requirements of their study programme, may be allowed to leave site between contact lessons and supervised study sessions.
