Year 7 & 8

What are we studying?

The Year 7 and 8 scheme of work has been developed to cover a wide range of mathematical skills and is differentiated to ensure students are suitable challenged and nurtured depending on their needs. Students can expect to study topics with strands of Number, Algebra, Ratio/Proportion, Statistics and Shape and will develop skills in; problem solving, using mental and written methods, constructing graphs and charts, logic and reasoning as well as how to use a calculator effectively.

How are we assessed?

Students will be provided with a revision task (in the form of an ‘I can do’ sheet) at the end of every topic to help prepare for our end of term assessments. From there students will sit a differentiated in class assessment at the end of term 1 and 4 as well as a standardised assessment at a mid year and end of year point.

How are we grouped?

At the beginning of the year students are placed into sets (1 to 3 or 1 to 4, dependant on their side of the year group) using their National Curriculum Levels at KS2 as a rough guideline. Sets are continually reviewed throughout the year, taking into account performance in class work, homework and assessments and students will be moved accordingly.

What homework are we expected to do?

Each term students will be set 6 homeworks; two will be spelling tests based on keywords used in class and four will be set by the teacher. Students will find details of homework on satchel one and will be given login details to mymaths and any other websites used.

What can parents do to help?

Please ensure that students have all the correct mathematical equipment, including ascientific calculator (this is available for purchase in school at a subsidy); help with the homework and do so in the student’s book so that we can see; encourage them to use notes in their exercise books from the previous lessons and to show all their working out clearly; encourage them to usewww.mymaths.co.ukas a support tool or as additional practice of a topic that they are finding difficult; ensure that they revise fully the night before a test.

Year 9

What are we studying?

The Year 9 scheme of work has been built as a ‘bridging year’ between KS3 and the GCSE curriculum. All students will cover the same topics but at varying levels dependant on their needs and will have opportunities to deepen their understanding of KS3 topics framed in a more GCSE style of teaching and questions. We start to use AQA GCSE textbooks and students can expect to see exam style questions within lessons. Topics such as SURDS, standard form and indices are introduced as well as Pythagoras and Trigonometry by the end of year 9.

How are we assessed?

Students will be provided with a revision task (in the form of an ‘Test yourself’ sheet) at the end of every topic to help prepare for our end of term assessments. From there students will sit a differentiated in class assessment at the end of term 1, 3 and 4 as well as a standardised assessment at a mid-year point. Students can expect to have a final end of year assessment at the start of term 6 which includes all topics covered during KS3.

How are we grouped?

Students will be placed into sets (1 to 7) which will be regularly reviewed throughout the year, taking into account performance and attitude in class work, homework, end of term assessments and end-of-year exams. Students are then moved accordingly.

What homework are we expected to do?

Each term students will be set 6 homeworks; two will be spelling tests based on keywords used in class and four will be set by the teacher. Students will find details of homework on satchel one and will be given login details to mymaths and any other websites used.

Years 10 and 11

Students will complete the AQA Linear GCSE course. Entry-level Mathematics is offered to students for whom GCSE is not appropriate.

In addition to their GCSE course there is an option of ‘GCSE Statistics and Further Maths’ which students take as one of their GCSE options. This is suitable for students in set 1 (and potentially set 2) where they will take GCSE statistics at the end of year 10 and GCSE Further Maths at the end of year 11.

How are we assessed?

Students will be provided with a revision task (in the form of an ‘Test yourself’ sheet) at the end of every topic to help prepare for our end of term assessments. From there students will sit a differentiated in class assessment at the end of term 1,2 3 and 4.

In addition, in the summer term of Year 10, students sit an end-of-year examination which includes all the topics covered during the year. Students also sit a mock paper in January of Year 11.

The exam board’s assessment is by three exam papers (two calculator and one non-calculator) at the end of Year 11. There is neither coursework nor controlled assessment in Mathematics. There are two tiers of entry: Foundation covering grades 5 to 1 and Higher covering 9 to 4.

How are we grouped?

Students continue to be in sets (1 to 7), regularly reviewed throughout the year, taking into account performance in classwork, home learning, end of term assessments and end-of-year exams. Students are moved accordingly.

What homework are we expected to do?

In year 10 each term students will be set 6 homeworks; two will be spelling tests based on keywords used in class and four will be set by the teacher. Students will find details of homework on satchel one and will be given login details to mymaths and any other websites used.

In year 11 students will expect to have a focus on past paper practice, and these will be regularly given out as homework, starting in term 2 and ramping up in frequency around term 4.

What can parents do to help?

Please ensure that students have all the correct mathematical equipment, including a scientific calculator (we recommend the Casio FX83GTCW or  Casio FX83GT+, which is available for purchase in school at a subsidy); help with the home learning where necessary and do so in the student’s book so that we can see; encourage them to use notes in their exercise books from the previous lessons and to use www.mymaths.co.uk as a support tool or as additional practice of a topic that they are finding difficult; ensure that they revise fully the night before a test. Many students find Revision Guides useful throughout Key Stage 4 (these are usually available to buy in school at a reduced price.)
