What are we studying?

Students will complete a 20 week course in Resistant Materials Technology [RMT] comprising one double lesson a week. During this time students will be taught how to design and make products using the resistant materials wood, metal and plastic. To enable students to design and make successfully they will learn how to analyse and research existing products, how to communicate design ideas graphically, how to work with the different materials and how to evaluate their finished product.

Students will consider different target markets, be able to write a specification for their product and learn how to use a variety of hand tools and some of the equipment, such as a pillar drill, for the different materials. At all times, safe working is paramount and the production of a suitable, high quality product is the main aim.

Students will work through 2-3 design and make projects in order to learn and develop their practical skills over the year; A brass key tag, an acrylic stationary holder or mobile phone stand and softwood bookends. These projects vary in time from 5 to 10 weeks in duration and introduce the students to working with the different types of materials and related tools, equipment and processes.

All materials for these projects are provided by the school, but students are expected to pay a contribution towards the cost of materials if they want to take their assessed product home. The cost currently varies from £1.00 - £3.00 for these Year 7 projects.

How are we assessed?

Students will have an end of Year 7 target for their Design Technology [DT] subjects which they will be working towards.

For each project they will have clearly explained Assessment Criteria based on the DT National Curriculum level descriptors.  Each project will be levelled and students given feedback on specific areas they need to improve.  Homework will be assessed throughout the course.

How are we grouped?

Students are in mixed ability groups for RMT and are timetabled for one double lesson a week in this subject area, but conducted on a rotation with Art, Food & Graphics.  The maximum class size is 23. 

What homework are we expected to do?

There will be one homework task set per week, which should take around 30 minutes to complete.  Occasionally longer tasks will be set over a number of weeks. This will include research activities, work sheets, design and development work.

Students are encouraged to read around the subject area to support their understanding and development of the specific vocabulary required for this subject.

What can parents do to help?

  • Support students in ensuring that home work is completed punctually and to a good standard.
  • Discuss house hold products with your child with regards to the materials used, method of construction and reasons for material choice.
  • Ask your child to name the tools and equipment they have been using during the week and what they are used for.
  • Test them on their subject specific spellings.
  • Encourage your child to discuss what they have learnt each week.
  • Look out for related articles in newspapers or television and discuss them with your child.

Useful resources and equipment:

  • Ruler, colouring pencils
  • A computer is useful for presentation, but not essential.
